DOLOMITES from Città di Fiume Hut to Staulanza Pass

DOLOMITES from Città  di Fiume Hut ( Città di Fiume Refuge or Rifugio Città di Fiume in Italian) to Staulanza Pass.
I’m not a senior explorer, neither a trained walker but after spending days between chaotic metropolis and tall skyscrapers, I really needed to breath clean and fresh air, see the blue sky, and beautiful green landscapes.

For many reasons mountains and in particular Dolomites, located a few hours from my home, they haven’t been considered so often as destination for nice walks.
So in good company, and thanks to a special guide (Paolo) I finally started my exploration of these beautiful places.

“The site of the Dolomites comprises a mountain range in the northern Italian Alps, numbering 18 peaks which rise to above 3,000 metres and cover 141,903 ha. It features some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes anywhere, with vertical walls, sheer cliffs and a high density of narrow, deep and long valleys. “

Since 2009 Dolomites are UNESCO World heritage, the highest award for a natural site.
As first excursion, not so difficult but very suggestive, we walked from  Città di Fiume Refuge to Staulanza Pass
Once you have parked the car at Monte Pelmo’s base , you can cross a dirt road (no car allowed) for about 2km. In this way you can reach Città di Fiume Refuge.
The landscape you can admire it’s unique, it’s a quite and wild corner in the heart of Dolomites, where You can breath fresh and clean air!

Once you arrive at Città di Fiume Hut you can proceed to Staulanza Pass.
You can take path n.480 going around the Pelmo, crossing the southern scree of Monte Pelmo and along great rocks.
In some points you can still find the snow! So please be careful if you don’t want to fall down… (as happened to me!)

The path is not always well indicated, so if you are not practice (like me) be careful and look you around carefully in order to check you are taking the right way. The last part of the path is along wood and pine trees.

After a short time you can arrive at Staulanza Pass. Here you can taste some Italian specialty, like “gnocchi” ( I highly recommend it!)

Forcella Staulanza

After lunch and a quick rest you can come back (path n. 472).
The excursion is not difficult and I can suggest it even if you are not trained up, because it can give you wonderful landscape and beautiful emotions.
In our busy live, we are always in a hurry…and often we need to stop for while thinking about the beauties nearby we have often underestimated!
